Wrinkles treatments with Botox, Xeomin and Dysport

With the passage of time, wrinkles and fine lines appear on the face. The signs of aging are most evident in the areas around the mouth, between the eyebrows and around the eyes.

  • In the lower part of the face, the corners of the mouth turn down, and perioral wrinkles appear in a sunbeam pattern of lines into which lipstick may “bleed.”
  • In the area between the eyebrows, frown lines appear as two or three vertical wrinkles making the face look serious and severe.
  • Crow’s feet are fine lines that fan out from the corner of the eye to the temple.

There are two mechanisms that cause wrinkles:

  1. The repeated contraction of muscles under the skin typically produces wrinkles in the upper part of the face (forehead, space between the eyebrows and area around the eyes).
  2. The loss of collagen, the substance that supports the skin, in the deep layers of tissue produces a generalized thinning of the skin on the face.

Dr. Hébert performs a thorough examination of your face, skin and facial expressions before deciding on the appropriate treatment. The approach used depends on the underlying causes:

  • Repeated muscle contractions, especially in the upper part of the face, result in expressive or dynamic wrinkles.
  • Skin aging and sagging producing static wrinkles.

For treating dynamic wrinkles, Dr. Hébert uses botulinum protein. The best-known product in this category is Botox® Cosmetic. There are new products as well that has been recently approved by Health Canada: Xeomin® Cosmetic and Dysport® which are very similar and produces the same results. With all these products, very small quantities are injected into the contracted muscles that are responsible for crow’s feet, lines on the forehead, and between the eyebrows. More advanced techniques may address different areas of the face, for example, chin, perioral lines and neck.

With the injection of Botox® Cosmetic, Xeomin® Cosmetic or Dysport® after a five to ten day period, the muscles will slowly relax, and the wrinkles gradually soften and often disappear completely. The effect is temporary and treatments every four months are suggested to maintain the results.
